Engine overheating in Perth? What to do

Perth heat is hard on cooling systems. When the temperature needle climbs on the freeway, in Wanneroo traffic, or after idling with the aircon on, don’t “just make it home.” Overheating can warp heads, blow gaskets, and turn a hose or thermostat job into an engine rebuild.

Pull over, don’t push it

If the gauge is high, you smell coolant, or steam is coming from under the bonnet, ease off, turn the heater on full (it pulls heat from the engine), and pull over safely as soon as you can. Switch the engine off. Don’t twist a radiator cap while it’s hot — pressurised coolant will burn you. Call for help rather than driving on with the needle pegged.

Usual cooling culprits

Common causes in Perth summers: low coolant from a slow leak, a stuck thermostat, a tired radiator fan, a failing water pump, a blocked radiator, or a degraded hose that finally splits. Short-trip driving and neglected flushes make it worse. Dust and older plastic tanks don’t love 40°C either.
